Hidden at the East end of St Mary’s Church, Horsham, a remarkable Victorian machine is still hard at work: a Henry Willis organ.

Built in 1865, it is, as one visiting musician has said, a 'noble example' of a surviving Willis instruments of this period and remains central to the musical life of the church and town.

Help keep St Mary’s organ playing

After more than 150 years of faithful service, the organ now needs specialist restoration so that it can continue to support worship, concerts, education and community events for decades to come. The Organ Appeal has been launched to secure this unique part of Horsham’s heritage and to preserve its glorious sound for future generations.

A Confounded Box of Whistles

Sir Christopher Wren famously complained of the organ at St Paul’s as “a confounded box of whistles”, yet the great organs of the Victorian age became symbols of ingenuity, craftsmanship and civic pride. The Willis organ at St Mary’s belongs to this tradition, combining engineering innovation with a rich, expressive musical voice that still inspires all who hear it.

Today, expert organists tread lightly around worn actions and missing notes so that worshippers, concert‑goers and visitors can still hear the sounds that Henry Willis created for the people of Horsham back in 1865.

The goal of the Organ Appeal is to raise £150,000 to replace the failing mechanisms, secure the wind system and safeguard the historic pipework, while remaining faithful to the instrument’s original character.

Together, the community can ensure that this Victorian masterpiece keeps singing in the heart of Horsham for future generations.
